Exploring the area near Hiwasee Ocoee State Park I came upon this sign. I stopped and googled it not remembering exactly what The Trail of Tears was – history was never my strong suit. But now I consider myself a lifelong learner so I drove part of it…

In 1838-39 as part of Andrew Jackson’s {sad} Indian removal policy, the Cherokees were forced to give up it’s land east of the Mississippi and were force-marched to an area that is present day Oklahoma.

The Cherokee people called this the “Trail of Tears” because of it’s devastating effect on the people. They suffered from exposure, disease, and starvation while enroute and more than 4,000 died before reaching their various destinations.

Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw were forced to march by state and local militia.

In 2009, President Obama (a great President), signed a bill apologizing to those who endured the past injustice.

And injustice it surely was!
